Computer Science, Mathematics and Science

The Division of Computer Science, Mathematics and Science delivers undergraduate programs in Computer Science, Cybersecurity, Information Technology, Healthcare Informatics and Networking Systems and graduate programs in Computer Science, Data Science and Cyber and Information Security. Responsibilities

The division is seeking candidates for all ranks at the adjunct level to teach mathematics courses face to face on the Queens campus in areas of Probability and Statistics, Calculus and Algebra.

Adjunct faculty work under the direct supervision of the Division Chair. Once assigned a course or courses, they are expected to:

  • Prepare and distribute to students a course outline in accordance with the course syllabus.
  • Develop instructional materials (lectures, readings, assignments, exams, projects, etc.) that will achieve the learning outcomes as stated in the course syllabus.
  • Evaluate student performance throughout the semester and provide periodic and constructive feedback to students in a reasonable amount of time.
  • Be available to engage with students outside the classroom by email, phone, web conferencing, or face-to-face meetings.
  • Evaluate student performance and post final grades for each student within the timeframe required by the Provost’s Office and be available for two weeks after the semester concludes to discuss final grades with students by email or phone.
  • Promptly respond to requests for information before, during, and after the course as required by the Division Chair and the CCPS Dean’s Office.

Qualifications

For all ranks, a master’s degree in the discipline or a related field is required. At the instructor level, relevant industry experience and college teaching experience is preferred. At the assistant professor level, college teaching experience is required. At the associate professor level, college teaching experience is required, and an earned doctorate in a related field is preferred. At the full professor level, extensive college teaching experience, and an earned doctorate in a related field is required.

Assistant Professor of Game Development and Emerging Media, Tenure Track

 The Division of Mass Communication seeks a dynamic scholar-practitioner for a full-time, tenure-track appointment (industry professional) as Assistant Professor of Game Development and Emerging Media, commencing September 1, 2024. The ideal candidate is skilled in transdisciplinary storytelling and can bridge game development techniques and interactive authorship to courses in film and other creative production-oriented disciplines.

Candidates sought are student-centered and produce research and creative achievements that enhance the constellation of programs in our Design Factory framework. They employ evidence-based practices to meet the interdisciplinary needs of our collaborative community.  Successful candidates will teach intermediate and advanced game development and film production/editing courses, guide students in project management, and facilitate games' successful release and promotion beyond the academic context.

Responsibilities

This is a teaching-focused position (teaching 12 credit hours per semester) with opportunities for course reductions based on creative professional activity or research. Industry involvement, creative professional activity, and research productivity are important but secondary to a strong commitment to teaching excellence and student engagement. Division faculty are expected to participate in academic advisement, student mentoring, academic assessment, and other activities as required by the Chair and/or Dean. 

Qualifications

Minimum:

  • Terminal degree in game development or related discipline in interactive digital media.
  • Programming proficiency with a AAA-level game development platform
  • Experience in teaching undergraduate classes in (film) editing and production
  • College-level teaching experience (including teaching assistantships) or equivalent professional industry experience

Preferred:

  • Proficiency with Epic Unreal Engine
  • Expertise in virtual production, xR/AR/VR/MR, and other visual storytelling forms
  • Integrative approach to pedagogy (e.g., fusing embodied cognition in UX, design patterns in OOP, etc.) 
  • Proficiency with C++, C#
  • Emerging professional research/exhibition record
  • Interest in development of serious games: visualization, simulation, and interventions towards social good

The Division of Criminal Justice and Homeland Security has a dynamic practitioner/academic faculty division and provides the following relevant programs: Criminal Justice and Homeland Security majors and minors at the undergraduate level and growing graduate programs, including a Master of Professional Studies (MPS) in Homeland Security and Criminal Justice Leadership and a developing innovative Doctor of Professional Studies (DPS) doctoral program in Homeland Security.  Faculty focus on key areas of skill development that include critical thinking, oral and written expression, team membership, leadership and employability readiness. Responsibilities

The Division is looking for candidates who can support program growth, provide leadership and curricular programming, and teach across all four of the Division’s programs.  Candidates should be familiar with technology-supported learning pedagogy, be able to integrate technology into teaching using simulations software and techniques for real data analysis, both face-to-face, online and hybrid modes. The Homeland Security Simulation Center will offer student opportunities to apply coursework learning to realistic situations they may face. Candidates engage primarily in teaching and will support core and elective courses for a diverse array of students.  Our faculty engage in professional and program development and assessment and service to the University and broader community.  Professional activities including consultation, presentations, research and writing for the academic or professional community are expected. Student advisement and active participation in departmental and college events and committees will be required. 

Qualifications 

Candidates should have a terminal degree in criminal justice, homeland security or a related and relevant discipline.  Candidates possessing a JD who have gained admittance to a state bar association are invited to apply as well.  Special consideration will be given to candidates who possess professional practitioner experience in either or both Criminal Justice or Homeland Security disciplines. Research based teaching experience at the university level is preferred.

Preference will be given to candidates who can support the growth of graduate and doctoral programs and provide leadership and curricular programming in the new simulation and homeland security labs. Candidates should be familiar with technology-supported learning pedagogy, be able to integrate technology into teaching, using simulations software and techniques for real time data analyses, and use face-to-face, online and hybrid modes. Additional elements of knowledge of emergency management, global security dynamics and issues, cyber security, investigative services, data mining, information assurance, predictive analytics are welcome. Candidates must show evidence of teaching excellence, professional and scholarly activity, student engagement and a strong commitment to service. Participation in division, college and university governance is expected.
